Description: Patrolmen Steele and Gordon McDermid were shot as they sought to question two men in a car regarding a hotel burglary. As the Patrolmen approached the stalled vehicle, the suspects opened fire. Patrolman Steele was shot twice in the neck and died en route to the hospital. Patrolman McDermid, although wounded, was able to return fire, killing the 17 year old suspect. The second suspect, also shot, fled the scene but was apprehended. The suspect was charged with first degree murder and burglary. Patrolman McDermid survived his injuries.
