Description: Sheriff Smith and Deputy Sheriff J.C. Owen had arrested suspect on theft charges. While en route to the county jail, the suspect produced a handgun which was hidden in his clothing, and shot Sheriff Smith in the back of his head. Deputy Owen was shot and killed also as he jumped from the running board of the police car.
