Description: Deputy Marshal Sumter was shot and killed while serving court papers. Deputy Marshal Sumter found several men at a still and one of the men shot him with a shotgun. The man who shot Deputy Marshal Sumter was convicted of murder and sentenced to 45 years in prison. He was paroled in 1952 after the death of Deputy Marshal Sumter's widow.
