Description: Chief of Police Smith was shot, in an exchange of gunfire, when he stopped a vehicle and ordered the occupants out. Chief Smith was acting on a tip that the three suspects were transporting liquor. Chief Smith was shot twice. One suspect was fatally shot and the second suspect was wounded. Chief Smith was treated by a physician and was then transported home. Chief Smith gave a formal statement and said that the third suspect was not involved in the shootout. Chief Smith died of his injuries the next day. His assailant was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
