Description: On August 17, 1858, Police Officers Snyder and a second officer were severely injured when a cannon exploded during the celebration of the completion of the installation of the trans-Atlantic cable. Both officers were members of the National Artillery and were selected to load the cannon for a 100 gun salute which they did, without incident, until the 97th discharge. As the officers were loading the cannon, it discharged prematurely. The officers were transported to the hospital and they each had an arm amputated. Officer Snyder died of his injuries three weeks later on September 9th. The second officer survived his injuries.
