Description: Chief of Police Spencer was ambushed and shot in the back with a high-powered rifle in front of the police station. Chief Spencer and his fellow officers had transported suspects to the Lee County Jail in Tupelo that morning. The other officers then went for coffee and Chief Spencer drove alone back to police headquarters in Shannon. Chief Spencer was shot as he was about to enter the building and died at the scene. His assailant was not identified.
