Description: Patrolman Smith and fellow officers responded to reports of shots fired in an incident that became known as the Glenville riots. Lieutenant Leroy Jones, Patrolman Willard Wolff and Patrolman Lewis Golonka were ambushed and fatally shot by sniper fire. Patrolman Smith pulled two officers to safety and was reaching for a third when he was struck by a bullet in his shoulder which injured his spine. Patrolman Smith was transported to the hospital where he received medical care for 22 months. He was left paralyzed and retired from the department in 1987. On February 2, 1993, Patrolman Smith was admitted to the hospital due to a blood infection and died of heart failure on March 9, 1993.
