Description: Night Marshal Stephens and Officer Walter C. Brown responded to a report of a drunken man waving a gun at motorists in front of a church being used for a lodge meeting. When they attempted to arrest the man, he and a group of friends pulled their guns and shot and killed Night Marshal Stephens and Officer Brown. The shooting deaths of these two officers sparked riots in the town that resulted in several other people being killed.
