Description: Officer Turner was stabbed in the heart by an inmate in the mess hall at the Leavenworth Federal Prison in Kansas. The inmate, Robert Stroud, who became known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz" was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Three subsequent trials found the inmate guilty of murder with a sentence of death. President Woodrow Wilson received a petition for Executive Clemency from Stroud's mother and ordered a halt to the execution. The inmate spent the rest of his life in prison and died in 1963.
