Description: Ranger Tafolla and Deputy William Maxwell were killed while attempting to arrest members of the "Bill Smith Gang," a notorious band of horse thieves. Ranger Tafolla was shot twice in the abdomen and died later that night. Deputy Maxwell was shot in the head and died at the scene. The thieves escaped.
