Description: Chief of Police Thornton was shot while attempting to question three men regarding a burglary at a general store. As Chief Thornton was searching one of the suspects, a second suspect pulled a .38 handgun and shot him twice. Chief Thornton returned fire, wounding one of the suspects as they fled. The suspects were captured the next day. Three were convicted of murder and sentenced to death in the electric chair. A fourth suspect was also convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
