Description: Sergeant Taylor was shot and Guard Hiram Newman was wounded as they attempted to apprehend three prisoners who had escaped the East Texas penitentiary. The lawmen, preceded by bloodhounds, located the prisoners near a creek and a gun battle ensued. Sergeant Taylor died at the scene. His assailant was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
