Description: Undersheriff Thompson traveled on horseback from Missoula County to the Flathead Indian Reservation to serve an arrest warrant for a prisoner who had escaped from the Missoula County Jail. The distance traveled was approximately 60 miles and the temperature was over 100 degrees. When Undersheriff Thompson arrived at the reservation, he collapsed. He was delirious and remained in that state until his death. One week after arriving at the reservation, Undersheriff Thompson died of heatstroke while under a doctor's care.
