Description: Chief of Police Thatcher was shot after taking the wife of a suspect into custody. Chief Thatcher went to the residence with an arrest warrant for failure to pay a court fine. The woman refused to allow Chief Thatcher inside and threw a hatchet at Sergeant Thatcher who promptly placed her under arrest. As Chief Thatcher was about to escort her to jail, the suspect appeared and shot Chief Thatcher in the chest, killing him instantly. The suspect was arrested, tried in a court of law and sentenced to seven years in prison.
