Description: Superintendent Taylor was assaulted, stabbed and beaten to death by four inmates in the South Cell House of the Pontiac Correctional Center. Taylor was stabbed with a 10 inch shank two times in the chest and four times in the back and sustained several blows to the head with a pipe. Two suspects were given death sentences and the other two received life sentences. On January 10, 2003, the outgoing governor commuted the death sentences of all 167 Illinois death-row inmates, including the death sentences of two of Superintendent Taylor's murderers, as his last act in office.
