Description: Sergeant Thomas was stabbed to death by an inmate at the Columbia Correctional Institution. Sergeant Thomas was checking on inmates in the dorms when he was suddenly attacked by an inmate and stabbed in the neck with a shank. The inmate also injured a second officer with a heavy object in a sock. Both officers were taken to a hospital where Sergeant Thomas died. The second officer was treated and released. The inmate was transferred to a maximum security prison.
