Description: Officer Trench was found shot to death at the wheel of his patrol car with the headlights on, motor idling and the driver's side window down. Officer Trench was shot in the face and the neck at close range and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. However, in 1993 he was released by a judge who accused the state of prosecutorial misconduct and ordered that the man not be retried again. That decision is presently under appeal by the District Attorney's Office. The murder suspect was sentenced in January 2004 to 21 to 42 years in prison on aggravated assault charges.
