Description: Officer Tobin was among several lawmen searching for an escaped convict. In the darkness, one of the sheriff's posse shot Officer Tobin in the center of his chest, mistaking him for the escapee. Officer Tobin was brought back to Canon City in a railroad car and died eight days later of his injuries. Unfortunately, at the time of the tragic accident, no one at the bridge knew that the convict had been recaptured and returned to the penitentiary. Friendly fire.
