Description: Town Marshal Thornton was shot by an escaped suspect who had just fled from the custody of the jailer. The suspect had been charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct. The suspect went to his residence, retrieved a shotgun, located Marshal Thornton and then shot him three times. Marshal Thornton was transported to the hospital where he died two days later. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to two years in the reformatory.
