Description: Sheriff Uptegraft was shot when he answered a call regarding an intoxicated man who was threatening to shoot a neighbor. Sheriff Uptegraft tried, without success, to talk the suspect into giving up the .22 rifle. When a teargas canister was deployed into the home, the suspect began shooting. Sheriff Uptegraft was shot in the torso and died two days later. Hartford Police Chief John Landis was shot in the leg but survived.
