Description: On January 8, 1997, Officer Van Vegten and his partner were severely injured in a single vehicle crash while in pursuit of a vehicle involved in a shots fired call. While in pursuit of the vehicle, another vehicle veered into the other lane of traffic which caused the patrol car to strike the center lane curb and crash into a concrete planter. Officer Van Vegten was transported to the hospital in critical condition and was in a coma for six weeks. Officer Van Vegten was paralyzed from the chest down and legally blind. Since the incident, Officer Van Vegten underwent countless surgeries and battled several infections. Officer Van Vegten succumbed to his injuries on November 2, 2017.
