Description: Burglary in progress or pursuing burglary suspects. Officer Van Meter was shot while attempting to capture a burglar. Before he died, Officer Van Meter named the suspect, but the suspect provided witnesses who swore that he had been playing cards in a local tavern at the time of the shooting. The killer was never brought to trial.
