Description: Corrections Employee Dr. James Vanneter and Assistant Superintendent Hugh Johnson were stabbed and killed while working at the Virginia State Penitentiary. A convicted murderer who was serving two life sentences for first degree murder suddenly went berserk and fled from the clothing shop wielding a shank. The inmate stabbed a clerk, Carl Bobrosky, but not fatally. Assistant Superintendent Johnson was stabbed in the stomach and chest while in the industrial section. Dr. Vanneter was in the hospital when the inmate stabbed him in the face, arm and chest. The inmate was subdued by a guard with a tear gas gun and placed in isolation.
