Description: Patrolman Van Buren was clearing the streets of a mob during one of a series of riots that collectively became known as the Civil War Draft Riots. While he and three other officers were trying to rescue a fellow officer who was being beaten, he was also attacked. Patrolman Van Buren suffered a broken leg which never healed properly and died four months later in rehabilitation hospital. Patrolmen Peter McIntyre, John Starkey and Edward Dippel were also killed during the riots.
