Description: Deputy Sheriff Van Lewen was transporting two prisoners from the Western Penitentiary in Pittsburgh to the Fairview State Hospital for the criminally insane in Waymart when the inmates attacked then shot him with his own gun. Deputy H.B. Furlon was also shot but survived. Deputy Van Lewen died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen the following day. The first inmate was convicted of manslaughter and received a sentence of 10-20 years in prison. The second inmate was judged as insane.
