Description: On September 28, 1926, Guard Whitmore, of the Nevada State Prison, sustained serious burns while fighting a brush fire. Guard Whitmore, along with two inmates, had been detailed to fight a raging fire on the outskirts of Carson City, Nevada. Guard Whitmore re-entered the burn zone to assist another man when they were both surrounded by the flames. Guard Whitmore was transported to the hospital with severe burns and remained there until his death three days later.
