Description: On June 27, 1924, Deputy Keeper Walsh suffered a stroke when he and Deputy Keeper James Devlin were attacked and severely beaten by four inmates who were attempting to escape from the New Jersey State Prison. Deputy Keeper Walsh was transported to the hospital where he remained until his death six days later on July 3, 1924. The four inmates were recaptured. Deputy Keeper Devlin survived the attack.
