Description: Marshal Whittier was taking a prisoner to the county jail when he swerved to avoid an oncoming wagon. The horse-drawn buggy struck some loose rocks which caused it to overturn. Marshal Whittier was thrown to the ground and suffered head injuries. The prisoner went into town to get aid for Marshal Whittier, then quietly slipped away. Marshal Whittier died at home later that day.
