Description: Deputy Woods was shot while attempting to disarm a man who was a part of a mob who was forcibly moving the county records from the county courthouse at Eufaula to the town of Checotah. A political battle was raging between the towns of Eufaula and Checotah to determine which one would become the county seat for McIntosh County. Deputy Woods was shot three times and died of his injuries the next day.
