Description: Patrolman Wirt and Patrolman Donald Marler were ambushed and shot by a mentally deranged suspect as they patrolled their beat. The suspect, wielding a M-1 carbine rifle, shot both officers multiple times and continued shooting as they lay on the ground. Sheriff Bill Gough and three other citizens were also wounded by the suspect. The suspect turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.
