Description: Officer Whitby succumbed to gunshot wounds received one month earlier when he and his partner responded to reports of shots fired. When they entered the home, the suspect jumped out of a room and opened fire, striking Officer Whitby in the thigh and abdomen. Officer Whitby was transported to a local hospital where he remained until he died. The suspect was committed to a state mental institution.
