Description: Deputy Wiley was in pursuit of two escaped men he had just placed under arrest for illegally manufacturing whiskey. The suspects jumped into the French Broad River and swam to safety. Deputy Wiley followed the men into the river and drowned. Deputy Wiley's body was found four days later. The suspects were never apprehended.
