Description: Sheriff Wharton and Deputy Frank Brugh were shot and killed by a suspect they were attempting to search. The lawmen had arrested a suspect wanted for writing bad checks and escorted him to the jail. As they attempted to conduct a search, the suspect pulled a gun and shot both lawmen. Although mortally wounded, Sheriff Wharton returned fire, killing the suspect.
