Description: Sheriff Winningham and his son, Deputy Floyd Winningham, were shot when they went to a train yard to investigate a disturbance call involving an intoxicated man. The lawmen went to a boxcar and ordered the man to come out. The man opened fire, striking both men. Sheriff Winningham was shot in the abdomen and died the next day. Deputy Winningham was shot twice in the head and died instantly. After several weeks, the suspect surrendered. An angry mob hauled the suspect out of the jail and lynched him. Sheriff Willie Winningham, the son of Sheriff George Winningham and brother of Deputy Floyd Winningham, was shot and killed 3 months later in a separate incident.
