Description: Private Williams and Private Jack Smith were attacked by a group of workers on strike that erupted into a riot. Private Williams, Private Smith and fellow officers were en route to the scene of the Pressed Steel Car Company when the mob stopped the streetcar to intercept strikebreakers. A group of strikers had just shot and killed Allegheny County Deputy Harry Exley who was riding another streetcar. Gunfire erupted and chaos ensued. Private Williams was beaten, then removed from the streetcar and fatally shot in the head at point blank range. Private Smith, who was also beaten and shot, died of his injuries the next day.
