Description: Turnkey Walters was beaten by two suspects who had been arrested on charges of horse theft and were in jail awaiting trial. While attempting to escape, they bludgeoned Turnkey Walters with an iron stove shaker. Constable James Cronin was also beaten but survived. Turnkey Walters died of his injuries the next day. One of his assailants was convicted of murder and hanged a year later.
