Description: Constable Welch found the location of a jail escapee on a local flatboat. While approaching the boat, the suspect shot Constable Welch in both arms with a shotgun. When the Constable fell, the suspect's mother beat the Constable with a stick. Fellow officers arrived and took Constable Welch to the doctor's home where he died the next day.
