Description: Officer Welch responded to the pool room of the Algoa Correctional Center where two inmates were fighting. Officer Welch was assaulted. He received bruises to the face and chest while breaking up the fight. After the inmates were in a secured location, Officer Welch began to sweat and experienced severe chest pains before he collapsed. He was transported to a local hospital where he remained unconscious until his death one hour later.
