Description: Sheriff Waldo Williams, Chief Gossett, Chief Charles Coker, Undersheriff Ed Sumrill, and Police Officer W.F. McKinzey were searching for a group of bank robbers who were last seen driving a black Buick. Chief Gossett and the other officers spotted the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The suspects exited their car and began a gun fight with the five law enforcement officials. When the firing was over Sheriff Waldo Williams was critically injured and died later that afternoon. Chief Gossett was shot in the stomach and remained in the hospital under doctors care until his death.
