Description: On November 11, 1899, Deputy Sheriff Ward was assaulted while transporting a prisoner by steamboat from San Diego to the San Quentin Prison. The prisoner struck Deputy Ward on the head with a bottle while he was asleep. Deputy Ward sustained severe head trauma, lapsed into a coma and died three weeks later on November 27th. The prisoner was convicted of murder and executed by hanging.
