Description: Deputy Sheriff Whitson and Deputy Marshal John Phillips were shot and killed while trying to arrest two desperados at a corn dance in Muskogee, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Marshal Phillips and Deputy Whitson attempted to arrest one desperado, but another desperado shot at the men. Marshal Phillips was shot and instantly killed in the gunfire. Deputy Whitson succeeded in killing one suspect but was also shot and killed in the incident.
