Description: Sheriff Winningham went to investigate a complaint of a drunken man with a gun. As Sheriff Winningham attempted to arrest the man, the man drew his weapon and fired. Although mortally wounded, Sheriff Winningham returned fire, killing the suspect. Sheriff Winningham died at the scene. Three months prior in a separate incident, Sheriff Winningham's brother, Floyd and father, George, of the Pickett County Sheriff's Department in Tennessee, died in the line of duty.
