Description: Public Safety Officer Zapata was shot and killed while responding to a report of shots fired. As Kalamazoo Public Safety officers arrived at the scene of the call, the suspect opened fire. When the suspect attempted to flee, he encountered Officer Zapata in an alley and shot Officer Zapata twice with a rifle. Officer Zapata was killed instantly. The suspect then shot and killed himself.
