Description: Officer Zanella was shot when he stopped a suspicious man for questioning. Unbekownst to Officer Zanella, the man was an escapee from a nearby state prison. The man shot Officer Zanella through the heart. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. In 1973, while in Western Penitentiary in Pittsburgh, the suspect along with several other inmates, beat to death Lieutenant Walter Peterson. Five years later, the suspect committed suicide while incarcerated.
