Description: Officer Zannella was accidentally shot while pursuing a wanted suspect who assaulted a street car conductor near 5th and Holmes on April 27, 1901. An infection developed as a result of the wound and Officer Zannella's leg was amputated but gangrene spread throughout his body. He died on May 19, 1901. Patrolman Zannella had been with the agency for 18 months. He was the first Italian-American to serve for the Kansas City Police Department.
